Often keys and certificates need to be installed in specialized appliances for SSL acceleration, load balancing, remote Access solutions (VPN, VDI etc.), WiFi access points, etc.
Managed Keys takes care of the entire process from internal or external order to installation in the specific format that each appliance requires for the certificate, key and chain.
As an example a wild-card certificate may need to be installed on multiple servers in a web farm with Microsoft IIS servers as well as on a F5 BIG-IP appliance. On the web servers, only the key is typically installed since Windows manages the chain. Furthermore, the specific IIS Application Pool account need to be granted read access to the private key. However, on the F5 BIG-IP appliance, both the key and chain are typically installed as separate items referenced by a SSL Client profile. Managed Keys hides all this complexity and lets you forget all about certificates by providing a fully documented, fully automated and managed end-to-end solution.
Many of our customers have VPN solutions, WiFi access points, etc. from Cisco. For each appliance, the documentation explains all details about how it requires key and certificate chain in different formats and order of chain.
